FMS Detective for iOS — Privacy Policy
Last updated: May 14, 2026
This privacy policy describes how the FMS Detective iOS app (the "app") handles your data. It applies only to the iOS app and not to the separate macOS desktop app (which has its own privacy posture) or to the fmsdetective.com website.
The short version: the app talks only to the FileMaker Server you connect it to. No data ever flows to us or to any third party. There are no analytics, no tracking, no third-party SDKs, no advertising, no account creation, no telemetry of any kind.
What information the app handles
You provide:
- The hostname (URL) of a FileMaker Server you administer.
- Your FileMaker Server admin username and password.
The app retrieves from your FileMaker Server (and only displays to you):
- Server identity (name, version, IP).
- The list of databases hosted on your server and their status.
- The list of clients currently connected to your server.
- The list of scheduled tasks defined on your server.
- The list of plugins installed on your server.
- License information, backup configuration, and SSL certificate metadata.
- Other server configuration values returned by the FileMaker Admin API.
This data stays on your device. It is never sent to us, to fmsdetective.com, or to any third party.
Where data is stored on your device
- Apple Keychain. If you tick "Save to Keychain" on the connect screen, your admin password is stored in the iOS Keychain so you don't have to type it on every launch. iOS Keychain entries are sandboxed per-app and encrypted at rest. You can delete them by uninstalling the app or by manually removing them in iOS Settings → Passwords.
- Apple Keychain (session tokens). When you successfully connect, the app stores the short-lived Admin API session token in the Keychain. This prevents the app from creating excessive concurrent sessions on your server if you reinstall or relaunch. Tokens are bound to the host you connected to and expire automatically.
- App preferences (UserDefaults). If you choose to trust a server that uses a self-signed SSL certificate, the app remembers that choice so it doesn't ask again. This list lives in the app's preferences and is removed when you uninstall the app.
What the app does NOT do
- The app does not collect, store, or transmit any personally identifiable information about you to us or to any third party.
- The app contains no analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising SDKs, no tracking pixels.
- The app does not connect to any servers other than the FileMaker Server hostname you explicitly type in.
- The app does not require you to create an account or sign in to FMS Detective. It only authenticates against your own FileMaker Server.
- The app does not access your contacts, calendar, photos, location, microphone, camera, or any other system data outside what is described above.
Face ID / Touch ID
The app uses biometric authentication (Face ID or Touch ID via Apple's LocalAuthentication framework) to confirm certain destructive actions, such as closing a database. The biometric prompt is handled entirely by iOS — the app never sees, stores, or transmits your biometric data. The app only receives a yes/no result from iOS.
Children
The app is not directed at children under the age of 13 (or 16 in jurisdictions where that is the relevant threshold) and does not knowingly collect any information from children.
Changes to this policy
If we ever change how the app handles data, we will update this page with a new "Last updated" date.
